March is Poison Prevention Month, and as we prepare for spring, let’s make sure our yards and outdoor spaces are safe for our furry friends.
Fertilizers, pesticides, and weed killers can be toxic if ingested or even absorbed through the paws. Opt for pet-friendly products and wait at least 24 hours before letting your pet roam in treated areas.
Cocoa mulch – Contains theobromine (like chocolate), which is dangerous to dogs.
Compost piles – Rotting food scraps can harbor harmful mold and bacteria.
Spring blooms are beautiful, but some can be deadly. Watch out for:
Tulips & Daffodils – Bulbs contain toxins that can cause severe stomach upset.
Foxglove – Affects the heart and can be fatal.
Rhododendrons & Azaleas – Even small amounts can be poisonous.
Puddles, birdbaths, and neglected water bowls can become breeding grounds for bacteria. Additionally, antifreeze from driveways is highly toxic—even a small lick can cause kidney failure.
If you think your pet has eaten something toxic:
Call your vet immediately or the Pet Poison Helpline.
Do not delay—some toxins act quickly.
Try to determine what was ingested and how much.
